Microdermabrasion vs. Dermaplaning: Your Skincare Options

Cherry blossoms have long signified birth and renewal in Japan. Celebrating cherry blossoms is called Hanami, which literally means, “cherry blossom viewing.” Accomplished medical aesthetics specialist Elaine Phuah, DO, MBA, FACOI fittingly named our clinic Hanami Medspa, where she and our staff help clients revitalize their skin, renew their natural beauty, and blossom.

What is microdermabrasion?

Two of our most popular treatments are microdermabrasion and dermaplaning. Our team employs noninvasive, chemical-free microdermabrasion techniques to renew your skin’s tone and texture. In as little as 30 minutes, Dr. Phuah and our expert team exfoliate your dead skin cells using a small hand-held device, gently removing your skin’s outermost layer to reveal a more even tone. Microdermabrasion offers a perfect solution for:

We recommend pairing your microdermabrasion treatment with a chemical peel for the best results.

Dermaplaning 101

One of the newest techniques to burst onto the scene, dermaplaning offers chemical-free exfoliation, as well. Dr. Phuah and her team use a surgical-grade scalpel to remove dead cells and peach fuzz from your face. Afterward, you’ll feel reborn, as makeup and moisturizers go on like a dream. Dr. Phuah also advises combining this treatment with a peel for the ultimate renewal.

Among its many benefits, dermaplaning can:

Choosing between microdermabrasion and dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is one of the newest techniques in town. It is gentler on the skin than microdermabrasion, which is more invasive. That said, those with severe acne, skin lesions, or extremely thin skin are not considered good candidates for microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion should also not be used if you suffer from eczema, rosacea, extensive acne, sores, or sunburn.

Since dermaplaning is less abrasive, it can be performed on more types of undamaged skin than microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion utilizes fine crystals or suction to remove dead skin, so it may cause inflammation. Dr. Phuah recommends appointments every two weeks or so for microdermabrasion and monthly for dermaplaning.

Whether you want to remove peach fuzz and dead cells with dermaplaning or try the more intense microdermabrasion, both treatments exfoliate your skin for a more beautiful, glowing complexion. You can even try both on alternate months to see which works best.
